The Practice Guide is and online resource designed to support practitioners in using Aistear: the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework (2009a) and Síolta, The National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education (2006) together to develop, reflect on and extend your curriculum and in doing so, to better support all children’s learning and development. In particular, the guide focuses on building a curriculum based on children’s interests, questions and experiences; this is called an emergent and inquiry-based curriculum.
The practice guide is suitable for a range of early learning and care settings, practitioners, mentors, trainers, parents, students and other early learning and care professionals. It can be used individually, as part of a team, with other settings or with a mentor.
The Aistear Síolta Practice Guide includes examples of practice, self-evaluation tools, tip sheets, videos and podcasts. The resources in the guide help practitioners to identify priorities for development and to plan actions for positive change. In this way, the Practice Guide can be used for on-going review, development advice and support in specific area where opportunities for quality development have been identified.
The guide includes Curriculum Foundations and six pillars of practice.
